A Perfect House? No, But Maybe a Perfect Home!
Monday, April 20, 2009 at 5:00AM Recipe Rescue Update: First, I wanted to thank everyone who submitted recipes for my Recipe Rescue contest. I am so excited to try them, but I have one problem, now. My oven decided to go on the fritz and is not staying at a consistent temperature. While the repairman was here on Friday, my oven vacillated between 310 and 380 degrees, when set at 350 degrees. (This explained the burnt black crust on my French toast casserole from Wednesday.) Thankfully, I am getting it fixed this coming Friday. So, here is what I am going to do in the meantime. I will try the slow cooker and non-baking recipes this week, and wait to try the oven recipes next week. Then I will officially announce the winner on Friday, May 1st. Please check then for your name and recipe to be announced!
Now, for today’s thoughts:
I don’t know about you, but in today’s world of HGTV and Martha Stewart’s “Living” Magazine, I find myself looking at all that is wrong with my house. My house looks nothing like the perfectly straightened, wonderfully decorated homes shown in these television shows and magazines.
Just today, I perseverated on the following:
Chips of paint off my walls, especially on the corners.
A dark pattern of fingerprints going down the hall and stairwell.
A huge indentation in the kitchen linoleum.
Dust so thick on my furniture that BigGuy and Bird made smiley faces on them.
Mud specks on the carpet thanks to the muddy shoes from Saturday’s soccer game.
Toys, books, and colored pictures scattered in all the rooms.
Then, I happened to read this, and I realized that not all houses need to look like a television show or magazine. Some just need to be a home!
Here’s to all my fellow moms:
“Excuse this House”
Some houses try to hide the fact that children shelter there.
Ours boasts of it quite openly, the signs are everywhere.
For smears are on the window, little smudges on the door.
I should apologize, I guess, for toys strewn on the floor.
But I sat down with the children and we laughed and played and read.
And if the doorbell doesn’t shine, their eyes will shine instead.
For when at times I’m forced to choose the one job or the other,
I want to be a housewife, but first I’ll be a mother.

You really "hit a homer" with this one! Your home always looks lovely to us because you're all there. I can't believe you're having oven troubles again - hope it gets fixed. Mom2
Love that! I also have those smiley faces in the dust here and there ~ okay...everywhere. I will get to it, one day. Maybe today I will spend time where it is needed on the inside instead of where it is just showing on the outside.
Just wait Kristen, before you know it the hand prints will be up above the doors! Boy's just can't walk through the door...they have to jump up and touch the door frame! :)
Happy Monday!

Could you just convince my hubby of this? Then we would be fine! I have given up on having a clean house anymore.......
You described our house too. I'm glad you've made it a home filled with laughter & love.
Amen, Sister!
